Austin's oldest community band, making music together since 1975
"A gathering of adult musicians enjoying the challenge of a high-quality repertoire"
No formal auditions required. We welcome musicians of all skill levels who share a passion for music.
We perform challenging and diverse wind band literature, from classics to contemporary works.
Music as a form of continuous education and personal growth for adult musicians.
Our concerts are always free to attend, bringing music to the community.
"The Austin Civic Wind Ensemble is a gathering of adult musicians enjoying the challenge of a high-quality repertoire. The wide range of age and skill level supports our value of inclusion and fosters our mission of using music for lifelong learning, while promoting joy in our community through live performances."
Founded by Bill Whitworth, a 21-year-old "high school band geek who didn't want to give up being a band geek." First concert at Wooldridge Square Park on May 25, 1975.
ACWE performed for the first time at the Zilker Holiday Tree Lighting on December 4, 1977. This remains our longest-running tradition, continuing to this day.
Janet Rice joined the band and still plays with us today - our longest-tenured member. IBM became an early supporter, helping purchase our first timpani.
Under conductor Stan Beard's leadership, the band found stability at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, developing lasting relationships.
Rick Glascock's appointment as music director marked a turning point, transforming ACWE with fresh programming and attracting talented new players.
Under Robert Laguna's leadership since 2006, ACWE has grown to over 100 active members, performing challenging works like the complete Lord of the Rings Symphony.
"Resilience, stubbornness, total resistance to face reality."
- Janet Rice (ACWE member since 1978)
